Celebrating Ocean Day

On Friday 6th June, our school came together to celebrate Ocean Day - what a fantastic day it was!

Children arrived dressed in blue, showcasing incredible ocean-themed costumes. The excitement kicked off with an Ocean Parade around the playground, where children proudly displayed their costumes and impactful ocean-saving signs to the lively rhythms of samba music.

The day continued with an inspiring Lower School and Upper School Ocean Film Festival, guided by the wise words of Jacques Cousteau: "People protect what they love, they love what they understand, and they understand what they are taught."  The children enjoyed watching a variety of short films including: Tiger (Shark) King, How Deep is the Ocean?, Seagrass Beds, Wing Foiling, Surfing Dogs, Keeping an Eye on Plastic Pollution From Space, Giant Pacific Octopus and Ocean Acoustics to name a few.

Later, Year 4 had the incredible opportunity to participate in a live Q&A session with Rory from The Big Blue Ocean Clean Up. Rory shared his love for the ocean, revealing that his favourite marine animal is the whale and his favourite ocean plant is seaweed—because it squelches when you walk on it and sometimes, can even be eaten! He also shared his hope for the future: for more people to take action and for a world where no plastic pollutes the ocean.

It was a wonderful day of learning, creativity and action, reminding us all of the vital importance of protecting our oceans now and for generations to come.
