Our aim is to empower every child at Micklefield to truly understand and succeed in maths. We are dedicated to helping your child not just to succeed in maths, but to truly embrace and understand it.

We wholeheartedly believe in the mastery approach to learning. Our students take small, deliberate steps, building a rock-solid foundation of mathematical understanding. As challenges arise, your child can confidently build upon their knowledge, making maths a transparent and logical journey.

Our classrooms are a hub of interactive learning, where we encourage the children to experience maths in their own hands. This hands-on approach empowers them as learners and fosters a deep understanding of the concepts they're exploring.

“Pupils have an outstanding command of numerical and wider mathematical concepts. They enjoy being set challenges.”  ISI March 2023

From Reception to Year 6, we follow the concrete-pictorial-abstract (CPA) approach. This approach simplifies complex ideas, builds upon prior knowledge, and encourages students to spot patterns and connections, making maths an enjoyable puzzle to solve.

We are also passionate about teaching the language of maths with a culture of "maths talk" to break down barriers and eliminate any maths anxiety. We expose every child to precise mathematical vocabulary consistently throughout their learning journey; our aim is to boost your child's confidence, skills, and understanding.

  • Children up to Year 4 are guided by their class teachers.
  • Our dedicated specialist maths teachers lead Years 5 and 6.

We utilise a range of resources, including Power Maths, LBQ (Learning by Questions - a digital app), games, murder mysteries and mathematical team games to make learning maths engaging and enjoyable.

For those young mathematicians who have a passion for the subject, we encourage participation in National Maths Competitions. Every Year 5 child is welcome to attend extra maths sessions, with many going on to achieve incredible results in competitions aimed at much older children. Above all, our maths learning is carried out in the spirit of fun because maths at Micklefield is an exciting adventure waiting to be explored.

“Pupils’ attainment is excellent. All groups of children attain very highly compared to those taking similar tests nationally.” ISI March 2023
