Literacy is the key to education and so much more.

We aim to inspire and develop our childrens ability to listen, speak, read and write for a wide range of purposes, including the communication of their ideas, views and feelings. Children are taught to express themselves creatively, imaginatively and accurately as they become enthusiastic and critical readers of all genres, accurate and fluent writers, and clear communicators.

We encourage a love of reading, with a well stocked and accessible library, book collections in every classroom, reading challenges throughout the year and author visits to inspire.

"Younger pupils' English books feature accurately punctuated and imaginative writing that makes highly effective use of writing techniques such as alliteration and powerful vocabulary." ISI March 2023

A phonics scheme is introduced in Reception and pupils follow a reading programme until they become free readers.  A writing scheme called ‘The Write Stuff’ is used to sharpen writing skills. This scheme helps pupils with the ideas, literary techniques and grammar tools of writing.

Our children regularly present work orally in the classroom in the form of book reviews, show-and-tell activities, discussions and debates. There is a strong focus on creativity, communication and collaboration.

English sits at the heart of the Prep School education and we set the highest of expectations for every child, to always strive for and reach their best.  English is celebrated throughout the calendar year through writing workshops, World Book Day events and well-attended Parent/Pupil Book Clubs.

"The most able pupils' writing is extremely advanced for their age." ISI March 2023
