Our history curriculum is designed to ignite a fascination with the past in our children. Through engaging lessons and activities, we aim to teach a sense of curiosity and understanding about the lives of people who lived in different eras.

Our curriculum is built upon a number of key objectives:

  • A love for the subject: Our primary goal is to instil a genuine passion for history. We believe that by nurturing this interest, the children will continue to explore the subject long after their time at Micklefield.
  • Uncovering British history:  We ensure they gain a comprehensive understanding of significant events in British history. This knowledge helps them appreciate how society has evolved over time within the British Isles.
  • Mastering chronology: This skill allows them to place historical events in context and draw meaningful connections between different time periods.
  • Embracing a wider European perspective: Recognising that Britain is an integral part of the broader European cultural tapestry; our curriculum also delves into various aspects of European history.
  • Global awareness: We ensure that they have some knowledge and understanding of historical developments on a global scale. This broadens their horizons and helps them appreciate the interconnectedness of world history.
  • Cultural heritage: We help our children to understand society and their place within it so that they develop a sense of their cultural heritage.
  • Developing critical skills: We equip our children with essential skills such as inquiry, investigation, analysis, evaluation, and effective presentation. These skills empower them to tackle complex historical questions and become adept problem-solvers.

We are committed to nurturing young historians who not only appreciate the past but also make informed choices that contribute positively to our modern, multicultural society.

"Older pupils' independent historical writing on Henry VIII focused on the aspects of his life that the individual pupils have found most interesting.  The writing demonstrated very strong attention to detail and advanced historical knowledge." ISI March 2023

Early Years

Children in Nursery and Reception are introduced to the concept of ‘history’ by exploring the past in discussion with teachers, parents, grandparents and friends. This is the beginning of their understanding of events, lifestyles and people from the past. Through activities and conversations, they learn how other people are different from them, yet share some of the same characteristics and ideas.

Lower School

Pupils develop an awareness of the past using a wide vocabulary of historical terms. They learn about the lives of significant individuals who have contributed to national and international achievements. They also discover where and how the people and events they are studying fit within a chronological framework.

Upper School

In Years 3 to 6, pupils continue to develop a chronologically secure knowledge and understanding of British, local and world history. They make connections, discuss trends, construct informed responses and understand how our knowledge of the past is constructed from a range of sources.
